Upconvert DVD Players - the Next Best Thing to Blu-ray and HD DVD

DVD players which have an upconversion feature are the perfect mini-step to a next generation DVD player and will help you get more out of your HD TV.

As you research and set-up your home theater, you have probably heard of the next-generation DVD technologies: Blu-ray and HD (High Definition) DVD. Blu-ray and HD DVD have been battling for a while and there are pros and cons for each. Currently, they are the only two video sources that
give a true 1080p, high definition picture on HD TVs.

HD DVDs and Blu-ray Discs are phenomenal examples of picture and surround sound quality. However, many consumers are hesitant to invest the average $500 price tag until they see where the Blu-ray vs. HD DVD war will go.

The Upconvert DVD player is the perfect middle option to demonstrate the high definition capabilities of your HD TV without a large investment. And you can still get some more miles of your DVD collection without re-buying everything you already own.

Regular DVDs are standard definition. Playing a standard definition source (such as DVDs or regular digital cable) on a High Definition TV will still look good. But it will not show off the capabilities of your HD TV. Upconvert technologies take a standard definition signal (average 420i resolution) and revs it up to display with the quality of a 720p, 1080i, and sometimes even 1080p resolution. (If you are completely lost about resolution and not sure about the differences, check out my article on Understanding HD Definition.)

Prices range from $75 for off-brand, DVD play-only products to $250 for a DVD/VHS recorder combination with upconversion. It is important to note that both Blu-ray and HD DVD players will upconvert your standard definition DVDs as well. The upconvert DVD player is just an option for those consumers hesitant to make the jump to a next generation DVD player too soon.

Also, if you consider surround sound as a piece of your home theater puzzle, consider a receiver which includes an upconvert DVD player. You can eliminate more boxes to cram in your TV cabinet and still get the most out of your HD TV.
