There are many Christians, and for that matter churches which seem to have a problem with the music used in the worship of our Lord and Savior. These Christians feel that the old hymns are the only true music worthy of God. How can you disagree with this assertion when you realize that the Christian Rock, and other genres of music are offshoots of the secular music scene?

It seems all people have their preferences when it comes to music and the Christian church is no different. What they fail to realize is that the worship of the Lord comes from the Spirit of man and anything else is an insult. The hymns are beautiful songs which were written in recent centuries and are easy to lead the congregation in. Most people know at least a few of them that they remember from childhood. The thing about the hymns which are not commonly known is that they too were secular songs which the Christian author merely changed the words, but the music remained. These were the popular songs in their time, and if Rock ad Roll existed at the time, that is what they would have been labeled.

At the time that these hymns were brought forth and played before the congregation, I am sure that the older members of the church took issue with the new style of music. I can picture the elders of the church being angry and trying to banish the hymns because they were just to progressive.

History always seems to repeat itself and we continually find ourselves addressing the same issues over and over again. I am convinced that the Lord loves any praise which comes from the Spirit of man. Is this not how we are to worship the Lord, in Spirit and in truth? Yes and it is in some individuals Spirits to worship the Lord with the talent they have to make their own particular brand of music.

Great article! I believe that any praise that comes from the heart is what God wants to hear. My favorites are the classic hymns, gospel (the loud, shouting kind. LOL), and gospel reggae. I see nothing wrong with any type of positive, uplifting music. :-)

I completely agree. The test is it true worship. There are people who sings hymns and don't pay one bit of attention to the words they are saying. There are rock/indie Christian bands who want to use it as a means to get ahead. "The time will come, and now is when God seeks those who worship in Spirit and in Truth." I like a lot of musical genres. I'm partial to some hymns, but favor contemporary praise and worship which tends to address God directly and personally, for me. Worship is a gift that we give to God. I enjoyed your article. You addressed some issues that people struggle with. If they studied Hebrew and understood, "make a joyful noise," most people would leave Church saying a "joyful noise" was too loud. It is celebratory, jubilant, and loud.
