Halloween is always a childhood favorite because it's the only night that gives children permission to dress up as their favorite characters and beg for candy and treats. Some parents are less than thrilled to see their kids load up on sugary treats at Halloween and prefer healthy or more education alternatives. This Halloween, with a little creativity, you can thrill the neighborhood trick or treaters with more than just boring dime-store candy. Use some of these healthy, educational or just fun treat ideas:

Educational

Little Golden Books makes many of their childhood classics in super-condensed, pocket-sized books for party favors. Throw a copy of Pokey Little Puppy or Sesame Street in those Halloween treat bags.

Small decks of fact cards, sometimes set up like playing cards with interesting trivia on each one and available on-line or at educational stores, are those sneaky treats that look like toys, but have educational value. Pick universal themes that children are fascinated by, like nature, dinosaurs, geography, or animals. Or look for Halloween seasonal themes with vampire, werewolf or witch lore.

Healthy

Instead of Halloween candy or treat-sized cans of soft drinks, decorate lunch-box size bottles of water and juice boxes with sparkly Halloween stickers. To really get creative, glue squiggly eyes and use stickers to make a spooky or fun face on your juice boxes. Use pipe-cleaners to make wings or antennae. It sounds very simple, but young children will have fun playing with them and forget they received apple juice instead of chocolate.

Raisins are often touted as the healthy Halloween alternative, but the sad truth is few children develop a taste for raisins early in their life. Instead, consider small bags of trail mix. It still contains chocolate and the flavor combinations are much better received, but still far healthier a Halloween treat than plain candy.

Great ideas! It's nice to see some real alternatives to lots of sugar.
