There are many different ways to make bird feeders. Many however require added tools that you need to buy. These can include wood, nails, hammers, and many other things. So is there an easier way to make a bird feeder without having to buy all these materials. Well yes, there is an easier way.For many years I have used this project for children in nature day camps that I have worked in. It is so easy that my youngest children, age 5, can do it. The best part is that you need not help that much. It is also a lot safer than giving a five year old a hammer. That could turn out very badly.
There are only four things you need to make this bird feeder. Many of these materials you probably already have at home. They are string, a pinecone, sunflower seeds, and peanut butter. The first thing you want to do is find a big pinecone. Little ones tend not to work as well and you can't get as much peanut butter on them.
After you have found the pinecone, take your string and attach it to the pinecone. You do this by wrapping it around the top of the pinecone. Make sure your string is in a loop so that you can hang it up after it is made.
The next step is to smear peanut butter so that it completely covers the pinecone. This is my campers favorite part about the whole craft. It lets them get their hands dirty. Make sure there is a thick coat of peanut butter on otherwise the sunflower seeds will not stick to the pinecone.
After smearing the peanut butter on take the pinecone and roll it in sunflower seeds. You can really use any type of birdseed you like but I prefer this kind since many people have them in their house already. Coat the entire pinecone with the seeds; this is what attracts the birds.
After you are finished making your pinecone birdfeeder take it outside and hang it on a branch of a tree. Leave it there until the birds have picked it clean. Then make sure you dispose of the pinecone and the string. That's all there is too it, a simple and easy way to make a bird feeder. It is so easy to do with small children, so try it out yourself. The birds will be highly thankful.
