Some people have a hard time thinking of a factory as a tourist destination. Those people have obviously never been to the Mercedes-Benz US International Visitor Center and Factory Tour in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. This unique tour starts at the visitors center and walks visitors through every phase of the process of building a new Mercedes-Benz automobile.

The early days of the Mercedes-Benz factory in Tuscaloosa seemed to be overshadowed by an impossible task. The goal was simple in theory, but more complex when it got down to it. Mercedes-Benz wanted to build an entirely new line of automobiles, at a new factory, in a new country, with an entirely new staff. It was an enormous undertaking, and it's no wonder that Mercedes-Benz and the City of Tuscaloosa are so proud of this monumental achievement that they have decided to showcase the results to the world.

Following the successful opening of the factory, workers quickly went to work putting together the Visitor Center and official tour for the Mercedes-Benz US International plant. This unique attraction is the only one of it's kind outside of Germany, and a true credit to the world of international trade.

All tours of the Mercedes-Benz factory start in the Visitor Center, where guests will be greeted by a guide who gives them a detailed tour of the entire factory. The tour shows every step of building a Mercedes-Benz automobile, from the initial weld to the final inspection. The tour showcases all of the Mercedes-Benz vehicles that are built in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, which includes the M-Class and the newer R-Class and GL-Class Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

The tour of the Mercedes-Benz US International plant concludes at the same place it began - the famous Mercedes-Benz Visitor Center. This is far more than your average corporate visitor center. It is actually a full scale museum that chronicles the entire history of Daimler-Benz, starting in 1886 and continuing on to the present Mercedes-Benz automobiles being constructed on the assembly line.

What a really cool thing to do. I really enjoyed reading all the race car history at the Benz web site, too.

Those of us fortunate enough to be MBUSI Team Members, we say, "Proudly Built in Alabama!"

Some of the history behind Benz and other companies is quite interesting as far as their role in WWII involvement. Not sure if that is covered here though. :-)
