A good chief bridesmaid will do all she can to make sure that the bride and groom's wedding day is a happy, joyous occasion. She will co-operate with the bride's wishes and be supportive of what she comes up with. But finding the right bridesmaid is not as easy as it may seem. Finding the right bridesmaid can be as difficult as choosing the most appropriate child minder from a long list of highly qualified applicants. What should brides look for in a good bridesmaid?

Trustworthy

Brides should look at prospective bridesmaids in terms of how trustworthy they are. Can they be trusted to make bookings, pick up flowers, dresses and deal with money? Bridesmaids are usually very close friends or family members. The benefit of choosing someone well known to the bride is that they are more likely to make a wise choice if they are very well acquainted with the person they plan on asking to become their bridesmaid rather than someone they have just known for a short time.

Puts Your Interests First

The bride and groom should only be interested in asking a woman to be their bridesmaid who is going to put their needs before their own prior to the wedding, during the wedding ceremony and afterwards too. A woman who is known as selfish and very self absorbed might not be the best choice of bridesmaid.

Not Competitive with the Bride

All eyes should be focused on the bride on the wedding day as the bridesmaid stands in the background as a complement of the bridal picture of happiness. But if you choose a woman who is competitive, argues with the bride and wants a bridesmaid's dress to rival the wedding dress, then you should carefully re-consider your choice of bridesmaid.

Gets along well with your Fiancé

It goes without saying that the bridesmaid you choose to support and represent you on your wedding day should get along well with your fiancé. If she shows an obvious dislike for your fiancé, then you should look elsewhere for a bridesmaid who is more agreeable towards your fiancé.

Takeaways
  • Always look for trustworthiness in a bridesmaid
  • Will your interests be put first? This is very important for a wedding
  • A good bridesmaid will not try to compete with the bride, but will act as a complement to the bride
Did You Know?
It is better to take the time to choose carefully and make the right decision first time rather than face the rather daunting task of telling someone they are no longer welcome in your inner circle as your chief bridesmaid on your wedding day

I had my little sisters as junior bridesmaids and my best friend as bridesmaid. It was perfect!

Great article. You definitely don't want a competitive bridesmaid. When my parents got married eons ago, my mom's bridesmaid actually asked my father out for a lunch date afterwards. Don't know what came of that. :-}

Interesting perspective- I think most people just pick their best friend or sister.
