The Christian Post reports, "A majority of Americans believe the nation's founders intended the United States to be a Christian nation, a new national survey revealed. In the First Amendment Center's annual survey measuring attitudes toward freedom of religion, speech and press, 55 percent of Americans said they believe that the Constitution establishes a Christian nation. Furthermore, three out of four people who identify themselves as evangelical or Republican agree while about half of Democrats and independents do." While it is true that the pilgrims came to America to have religious freedom, it is not true that America was founded as a Christian nation. The pilgrims were Christians, but they certainly did not have "religious freedom." What they really wanted was freedom to practice and to force their own religious practices.
It was this way for quite awhile. However, as America grew and more people immigrated, things had to change. Most people were probably Christians. Some of the founders may have been Christians. However, a majority of America's founding fathers were not really Christians. They still believed in God and in prayer. However, they were deists.
They didn't have a set faith in Jesus Christ. It didn't mean that the denied Jesus, either. It just meant that they believed there was definitely a God.
So, with them believing this, some others Christians, and probably others of other faiths, America was not founded as a Christian nation. This is why we are supposed to have freedom of religion in America. If the religious practices do not break the law, then there is nothing wrong with them from a legal standpoint.
To try to force others to be Christian just because of a belief that America was founded to be a Christian nation is wrong in the first place. However, that belief is errant. America was meant to be a place of religious freedom. This is what needs to stay in practice.
