American film has come a long way since "Gone With the Wind" a film for which Hattie McDaniels became the first African American woman to win an Oscar. The black community was, and still is proud of this accomplishment. But over time, this community began to observe a trend where it concerned the casting of black people in mainstream films. At first blacks were the pimps, pushers, maids and prostitutes that kept audiences entertained. With a reasonable amount of protest and some ingenuity, these stereotypical characters began to fade into the background. But now, there appears to be a new set of stereotypes that mainstream producers and writers abide by when casting black actors. Is it that filmmakers of other ethnic groups do not research the black experience enough to portray it accurately on film? Or is it that Hollywood simply does not care? The new stereotypes are are lot more forgiving than those in the past. But after a bit of research, and careful examination of American pop culture, you'll begin to see some slightly disturbing trends.
