Rhode Island may be the smallest state in the union, but it is home to the Bristol Fourth of July Parade, the oldest continuous Fourth of July celebration of its kind in the United States. Each year, thousands visit from throughout the state, the region, the country and the world to witness, and be part of, one of the most glorious and patriotic celebrations to honor America's independence.

Since it was established in 1785, Bristol's Annual Fourth of July Parade has grown each year to become one of the longest July 4th parades in the country. There are over 10 divisions, each consisting of local and national marching bands, floats, clowns and performing groups. Being invited to participate in the parade is considered a prestigious honor, as both school marching bands and professional groups from throughout the country compete for the opportunity. Even professional performers, like the Mummers from Philadelphia, Pa., make it a point to reserve the Fourth of July for a Bristol appearance.

To really enjoy the entire Bristol Fourth of July experience, out-of-state visitors might want to plan a one or two week vacation in the East Bay area of the state. If not, plan on arriving early to get a good viewing spot along the parade route. Many begin reserving their spot as early as 5am. Once in the quaint seaside town of Bristol, it's easy to spot the parade route. Just look for the red, white and blue stripe down the middle of the road. There are other clues, too, like the patriotic bunting on the stately homes and historic mansions and the rows of American flags outside the stores lining Hope Street, the town's main street. You'll quickly see why Bristol is known as the most patriotic town in America.

The Bristol 4th of July celebration is the best! A 17 day long extravaganza that rivals Mardigras! There are a couple of one horse towns in Indiana and Penn. that claim to have the oldest July 4th celebrations, if they could actually see what happens in Bristol they would feel ashamed to even be comparing themselves to the 4th of July capital of the U.S.A. Our tiny little town of 22,000 people swells to over 200,000 people the day of the 4th. there is nothing else like it. Like I said, about the only thing I can compare it to is Mardigras. Do yourself a favor, make plans to spend next July 4th in Bristol,RI. America's most patriotic town! You won't be let down. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY celebrates the fourth like Bristol! HAPPY 4th!!!!
