There is no easy "cure" for depression. Contrary to popular belief, there is no "magic pill." While some anti-depressants work to restore a chemical imbalance in the brain that some doctors believe causes depression, some people still struggle with depression despite being prescribed a variety of drugs.

Chronic depression, however, can be cured without the use of drugs. By introducing several lifestyle changes, you can not only cure yourself of depression, but keep the disease from coming back.

One way to stave off the symptoms of depression is to eat right. Many people who suffer from depression are found to be lacking certain vitamin and nutrients. In addition, most anti-depressant medications strive to restore serotonin, a chemical produced in the brain that produces euphoria. Foods that help restore serotonin include those with high amounts of carbohydrates and dark green vegetables. Carbohydrates give the body a much needed boost and can be found in foods such as pasta, cereal and fruits. Dark green vegetables worth as both a serotonin booster and an antioxidant, as they contain high amounts of Vitamin E. Foods with high amounts of Omega 3 Fatty Acids, such as salmon, are excellent ways to boost serotonin and ones immune system.

Protein is another way to boost a depressive mood as is Vitamin B and Vitamin C. If you do not eat properly, take a multi-vitamin rich in Vitamins B, C and E.

One quick way to elevate serotonin is by eating chocolate. Dark chocolate is not only delicious , but is a natural mood enhancer.

Another way to help fight depression is exercise. When we exercise, we produce endorphins that stimulate our brains. Medical science believes that regular exercise can eliminate depression in most people. Exercise does not have to be strenuous, a simple 30 minute walk will give you a serotonin boost and make you feel a bit better. Many scientists believe that exercise is even more effective at combating depression that medications.

Now I know why I crave carbs so much...heh! And the dark green vegetables are good for so many reasons, especially for women, so it's an added bonus that it helps with depression. Thanks for sharing all this info!

Not to be political, but I can't help it: I would be less depressed if Bush wasn't president, if the horror would end in Iraq, if we didn't see the continued racial ugliness of situations such as Jena 6, if our cities were not dying, if 43 million were not uninsured and many others underinsured to obtain these suggested medicines, and so on. But I will try more of the dark green veggies, Michelle; already am getting more than my share of the carbs.
