I was infuriated seeing in papers that in my home town political parties and local authorities with the blessing of local merchant community closed down Reliance store. The reason is that the Reliance store directly buys from farmers at a good price and selling at a lower price for consumers.

Every time Kerala's fakely politicized social forces tried to push the clock backward. Kerala missed the IT boat. When market and economy changes, instead of riding on the waves for over all prosperity, they try to roll back history. How long can they hold against express highways, special economic zones and super markets? They can delay it a couple of years and leave us far behind to our status as mere a consumer state.

Small businesses survive if they redesign their business model. They will be forced to do that once big consumer marts come into being. For example they can do more personalised services which those big marts never be able to do. It is like the furor about printed media that news papers, magazines and books are going for a silent death when internet and television is proliferating. Could the small artisans stop big industries coming into existence? Still there was room for small manufacturers to grow into big industries. Reliance also started as a small cloth business carrying bundles of polyester on Dhirubai's shoulder.

Reliance will start stores in Tamilnadu. Keralites will eat substandard vegetables imported from Tamilnadu by whole sale distributors (they are also big daddies) and conduct Bundhes and Dharnas to delay all these to happen just for a few years.
