You can feel the pendulum swing to the left. As with any society, the morals, values and political thought go from right to left with stunning regularity. The keywords that people like to use, "blow-back", "backlash" and the like, all cover this phenomenon. The world has gone through this periodically in its history.

Governments that swing too far to the left or right, invariably move back to the center. Sometimes, as in the case of Germany, the wild excesses of the 1920's and early thirty's left people longing for "traditional" values, but the blow-back of the move to the left, brought in a tyrannical right wing dictatorship that had to be removed by war.

What I see in this country is the same in reverse. Our experiment with right-wing leadership has caused many Americans to reconsider their values and their political stance. While many Americans wanted a strong, moral national government, they were not prepared for what was to come as Bush and Cheney delivered to the American people an almost fascist type of government that took the nation to wars of conquest and abrogated the populations civil rights and their protections under the United States Constitution. We now are faced with a government that the people no longer want, and no longer trust, with powers that have not been seen since our own Civil War.

Now, the pendulum is swinging left. Most Americans are disenchanted and more than that, they are fearful of what this government will do next. We are effectively shielded from information that historically came from the press, as it has also caved-in to the far right in its reporting. The Internet is the only viable way to get uncensored information about what is really taking place. Americans are now getting their news and information over the web.

Insofar as information is still coming to Americans, we are still privy to what our government is doing in our name. Most Americans abhor this war in Iraq and don't want a replay in Iran. Most Americans want us to leave the area, and the protests are growing larger with the passing of time.

Use the media to scare them about Bird Flu and Hoffman La Roche adds to it's profit margain. Paint a picture of "we are hard workers" and the people allow for free health care for undocumented citizens and hospitals in So. Cal. are going bankrupt. Play on people's prejudiced and forget to mention Iraq switching to the Euro which will hurt the US in World Trade and the people will gladly had over freedom for security. Glad I am old and closer to death, but feel for my grandchildren.

Prohibition did not work and even Coke used to be allowed to use cocaine in their "secret formula". Get people in a frenzy about gangs and they will agree to restrictions on gun ownership (I do not like guns, personally and would not own one, but I believe in the rights of citizens to bear arms). Tell a naive population that they can catch lung cancer from a few whiffs of second hand smoke and they willing make criminals out of smokers.

Even when the Constitution and rules for a democracy were drawn up, it was a few who made themselves rulers that wrote the document. The words "of, for and by the people" were great and could work, if the elected officials realized that it is not them versus us. (Hillary Clinton and GWB are good examples of Mama and Papa, dictator style rulers.) Depending upon ones reasoning power, one could see the "shock and awe" premeditated, "let us lead the people into accepting dictatorship syle leadership".

It all started with the peanuts. How does it "promote the general welfare" to ban them on airplanes. Now a school wants to disallow peanut butter sandwiches to be served in the school cafeteria, because, omigod, one student in the school is allergic to peanuts. It actually probably started back in Depression time, when the gov decided the citizens should pay into Social Security or enforced savings towards retirement. How adults continued paying Fed Income Tax after the two year levy to pay for the war, is beyond me. (I was born into the established system.)

You are right, the corporate side of America is very much interested in keeping the status quo, or even going further into fascism. For the free thinker or person who values liberty, there are really only two choices..wait until it gets bad enough to bring true change, or work from within to bring change. I think both is the best way...do all we can to bring change, while preparing for the worst.
