The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) awarded nearly $24 million in grants to expand and/or enhance substance abuse treatment.

Substance abuse is prevalent in America. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV defines substance abuse as one or more of the following: recurrent substance use that interferes with one's ability to fulfill his or her responsibilities to school, work, or family, using substances in potentially dangerous situations, such as operating a vehicle, reoccurring legal problems due to the use of substances, and/or continuing to use substances despite the problems using substances has caused or worsened.

SAMHSA recognizes the importance of substance abuse treatment and is awarding nearly $24 million to organizations that will expand or enhance substance abuse treatment. The grants being awarded are focused on four areas of substance abuse treatment.

Native American/Alaska Native and Asian American/Pacific Islander Populations: The following organizations were awarded grants and will focus on the substance abuse treatment needs of Native Americans/Alaska Natives and Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders.
