Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Review

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo was originally released for multiple systems starting in 1996 (with the Playstation version being the most popular one). Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is an updated version with reworked graphics for the new generation. For just 800 Xbox 360 Live Marketplace Points or $9.99 for the Playstation Network, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is a must for puzzle fans.

Graphics
The graphics has been redone in High-Definition. While the backgrounds and character portraits look extra smart, the character sprites look way too blurry. You have to wonder why the character sprites are done in low-resolution while everything else is done in high-resolution.

Otherwise, the game runs smoothly, as expected. There are noticeable lag in online matches though.

Sound
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix has music featuring Street Fighter 2 remixes, which is very nice and nostalgic. And although the audio is a little too loud, you can adjust it in the audio settings menu.

Gameplay
Ultimately, gameplay in Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is about balancing your attacks with combos in addition to building big gems while keeping your columns from filling up (you will lose when the forth column gets filled up).

The game has four color gems: blue, red, green and yellow. Connect the same color square-shaped gems to form even bigger gems to deal massive damage to your opponent. You can then use the round gems (known as the crash gems) to break all the connected square gems, provided the round and square gems are the same color.

By breaking your gems, you are attacking your enemies by sending them counter gems, gems that can't be broken for a number of turns unless you break the adjacent normal gems; the bigger the gems that are being broken, the greater the attack power.

You will get some help as every 25th gem is a special diamond gem that will break all the gems for the color it manage to land on. They are lifesavers that could quickly turn the match around.
