What is Wikipedia?

Anyone who has ever looked anything up on the internet has probably run into Wikipedia. Wikipedia is a free service that provides information on just about anything. Wikipedia is touted as "the free encyclopedia," but much information on this site cannot be found anywhere else. Because it is continually growing and constantly updated, Wikipedia is probably the best source for quick information in any given subject matter.

Wikipedia is run by the Wikipedia Foundation, a not for profit organization from St. Petersburg, Florida. The website is supported by grants and donations to the foundation. Wikipedia has existed since 2001 and since that time has grown into one of the largest information websites in the world.

Contributors to Wikipedia vary from all walks of life. Scholars, students, writers and others all contribute to the content on this site. Contributions are strictly voluntary; there is no payment associated with writing for this site, nor are any name credits given to the author. In addition, the information derived from Wikipedia is in the public domain; it can be copied and used by anyone without fear of copyright infringement. Photos in Wikipedia are also considered to lie within the public domain.

If you use information contained in Wikipedia for a report or article, the site asks that you cite your content. This means indicating somewhere within your content that you received this information from Wikipedia. In addition, writers who contribute to Wikipedia are asked to cite their sources.

Wikipedia has volunteers throughout the world and currently offers information in over 250 different languages. Anyone who feels they have knowledge to contribute to the website can do so in virtually any language.
