Everyone hopes that the time does not come when they feel the need to place their parent in an assisted living facility but the day may come when you have to face this decision. Talking to your parent about moving into an assisted living facility may seem like a challenge but there are ways to help them understand your concern and why one may be necessary for them.

Talking to your parent or parents

Right now, you all could use some moral support when dealing with this. Never talk to them like they are a child and try to get someone else to go with you. Talk about the benefits of an assisted living facility.

The benefits of an assisted living facility

Assisted living facilities are equipped with the right tools to help them if they ever need the medical attention. Assisted living facilities have doctors and nurses that are on call twenty-four hours a day so that they can assist them if ever needed. In an assisted living facility, your parent/parents will get help with cleaning, laundry, meals, and other chores that they may have trouble dealing with. Assisted living facilities will usually offer activities to keep them active and entertained while they are staying there. There are many benefits to an assisted living facility and you should pick up a few brochures to prepare yourself with all the benefits of the living in one.

What about the cons of an assisted living facility

There are always reports on the news about senior abuse and this is a growing concern so be prepared with a back up plan on talking about this. The government and law enforcement is trying to get assisted living facilities in tip top shape but they are not always able to get rid of the bad seeds in the facilities, this is why it is important for you to do a background check and monitor the facility for a while before considering the possibility of placing a parent in that particular one. Look for people who have been placed there or talk to a child of a parent who is there and see what their recommendations are.

This is an important issue. My grandmother just made the decision on her own to move to assisted living. It made things much easier on my mom and her siblings. She is very happy there and doing much better than living alone. Great job on the topic.
