Think of the term "coach" and the images that pop into one's mind are those of a basketball team playing a match, with a man standing on the sidelines and yelling out instructions to the players on what to do next. However, the meaning of the word "coach" is becoming more generic. It truly has gone beyond the sports arena into management boardrooms and colleges.

Coaching in the context of improving a team

According to Daniel Goleman, coaching is one among six emotional leadership styles. Unforeseen circumstances can force a person to don the mantle of a leader. It is here that knowledge of coaching would be useful. It is possible that even a team with a high motivational level and superb skills would fail if there is no ample coaching.

Coaching is useful at both individual and group levels. While assessing individual efficiency and commitment, the coach may discover that some are at a much higher level of competence than others. Expectations from self and from others may create conflict among the various team members. It is up to the coach to act as a mediator and bring everyone together on a level platform. Individuals then begin to rise above personal interests and work towards a common goal.

Coaching in the context of self-improvement at work

Individual coaching is often perceived to be better than group coaching. Self-confidence builds up with positive feedback. Desire to improve personal competency is enhanced with recognition of one's weaknesses and strengths. At work, with the guidance of the coach, the individual can aim for better career planning and development.

The role of a coach changes with the stage of the development of the employee. New employees often require extra attention because of their lack of experience. Over time, the coach stops acting like a director and supporter, and starts to delegate responsibilities.

Coaching brings leadership qualities to the fore

I equate coaching with mentoring. Having a good mentor/coach and the knowledge of their experience has helped me significantly throughout all of my endeavors.
