How to Shop for Carpet Installation Quotes

Before my husband and I purchased carpet for our cottage, we shopped around at several places for estimates, which included both the carpet and installation. We discovered that all estimates are not alike, which made it very difficult to compare rates.

What exactly does "with installation" include?

If you have ever walked through a carpet store, you may have noticed that many of the carpet samples show a "with installation" price. This price usually includes a basic installation package which does not include a carpet pad, warranties, removing old carpeting, or anything that is regarded as custom work.

To be able to compare quotes, the carpet salesman must know the degree of the work involved, so he can prepare a comprehensive bid.

The price of the carpet is only one variable, another factor which affects the cost of installation is the price of the carpet pad. Carpet pad pricing range from $1.50 to $3.50 per square yard depending on the quality of the pad and type. Custom carpet installation such as carpet on a staircase or over multiple levels, will also add to the cost.

It also helps to remember that there is quite a bit of difference between installing brand new carpet and replacing an existing carpet. Installing new carpet is rather straightforward; there isn't any old carpet to be removed, furniture to be moved around, or old carpet tacks to deal with. Replacing an older carpet is much more involved, and the quote should include all these different costs.

The bid should cover who will be removing the old carpet and pad, and the disposal fees. Are there carpet tacks to be pulled up or thresholds to replace? Who will remove the furniture and put it back? By asking for an itemization of these items, you will be in a better position to compare quotes.
