Ghost Stories
The Figueroa Hotel used to be a YWCA Residence, built in 1925. Today it is a budget hotel.
There isn't a specifically identified spirit, but a number of strange things happen at this hotel. It is said that eerie sounds emanate though the hallways and rooms. Televisions turn themselves on and refuse to turn off. The elevators moves up and down on its own, stopping on certain floors. When the elevator doors open, no one is there.
History of the Figueroa Hotel in Los Angeles, CA
The Figueroa opened in 1925 as a YWCA residence hotel. YWCA stands for Young Women's Christian Association. The YWCA is an association which advocates for women and girls. The purpose of the organization is to develop the leadership of women and to achieve human rights, health, security, dignity, freedom and justice. The YWCA today helps women with important issues, such as family life, women's empowerment, sexual assault crisis services, youth development, job corps, health, fitness and more.
As a residence hotel, the YWCA provided safe, inexpensive lodging for women.
The YWCA is still active in Los Angeles today, but this particular facility was sold after the Great Depression of the 1930's, the YWCA was converted into a hotel.
The Figueroa Hotel has an intriguing, romantic atmosphere with touches of Casablanca, Morocco and Arabia.
The twelve story hotel sits among the skyscrapers of downtown Los Angeles. The lobby looks romantic, with high beamed ceilings and tall columns. Furnishings are called medievalist, with big floor pillows made of Kurdish grain sacks, Persian kilims and exotic fabrics hanging from the ceiling.
