Heading into the last game of the regular season it was unclear on exactly how the Arizona Diamondbacks would be entering postseason play. Would they have the best record in the entire National League? Would they slip all the way to the Wild Card? No matter which way the Diamondbacks enter October baseball what's important is that they will be playing in the playoffs in 2007. The fact that the Diamondbacks will be playing in the playoffs this year comes as a surprise to many fans. Everybody knew that the Diamondbacks had young talent and were going to be a playoff team; in the near future. Hardly anybody believed that this team was going anywhere at the beginning of the season. Now, the Diamondbacks are headed into October and are a very dangerous team. Can Arizona win the World Series in 2007? Here are the reasons why the answer to that question is a "yes."
First reason why the Diamondbacks will win the 2007 MLB World Series: Brandon Webb
Simply stated, Brandon Webb has been awesome in 2007. Webb finished the regular season with 18 wins, tied for second most in the National League. Webb's 3.01 ERA was second best in the NL, he averaged more than seven strikeouts per start (7.39) and had a WHIP of 1.19. He also had four complete games and had three shutouts. Webb has owned the National League through 2007 and he is definitely the type of dominate starter that any playoff team would love to have. Any team that has to face Webb three times in a five or seven-game series will have its hands full.
Second reason why the Diamondbacks will win the 2007 MLB World Series: Jose Valverde
I've said it in almost all of the previous playoff previews and I'll continue saying it. A shutdown closer is necessary for any team to win a World Series. The Diamondbacks definitely have one at their disposal. Jose Valverde led all of Major League Baseball with 47 saves during the 2007 season. His ERA was only 2.66, simply outstanding for a guy who almost always only pitches one inning whenever he plays. If the Diamondbacks have a lead heading into the ninth inning I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the opposing team to rally.
