MySpace is a social phenomenon that reportedly has over 50 million registered users. There is some speculation if those numbers are accurate. It has been estimated that only around 18% of the registered users actually
return and use MySpace after signing up. Even with only 18% of those registered using MySpace, the number of page views it receives each day is enormous!
It has been my experience that most churches and non-profit groups either are not aware of MySpace or have not taken advantage of the huge marketing opportunities available to them through MySpace. MySpace is a great alternative to investing in a costly website, and will in most cases give you more exposure.
My husband and I recently planted a new church in Nashville, Indiana which is a very small town. Marketing opportunities are usually very limited in towns such as Nashville, so it is important to try to find different ways to get the word out. We decided to give MySpace a try.
Setting up an account in MySpace is very easy. You can choose to have a regular MySpace account, a Group, or a Music Space (used mostly by bands). Once your account is set up then you can add your personal information. If you take a look at our MySpace page you can see how we have chosen to arrange it.
I am a web designer so it was easy for me to create a custom page. If you don't have any HTML skills, there are hundreds of sites such as pimp-my-profile.com where you can copy and paste pre-made code into your page giving it an instant makeover.
One of the great things about MySpace is that it has a built-in blog feature. This gives you an opportunity to post articles about the topics your organization cares about. It also has an area called "About Me" where you can post an overview of what your group does and what services it offers. You can upload photos, music, slideshows, and more.
Make sure you choose a default picture that stands out. Use your logo if you have one. Bright colors work best. I wouldn't recommend using a photo as they tend to blend in with everyone else in the Friends section.
