Few people get excited when having to purchase a vacuum cleaner. Let's face it - it isn't like buying a new pair of shoes or the latest electronic gadget. Most of the time, we are looking for something that gets the job done, yet costs as little as possible. The Eureka Optima delivers on both counts.

Don't let the Optima's compact size fool you. It can handle linoleum, hardwood floors, and many kinds of carpeting. While it isn't recommended for extremely plush carpeting, those with indoor/outdoor or high-traffic carpets will appreciate how well it picks up even minute particles and bits of fuzz - as well as, on the opposite end, relatively large pieces of paper.

The Optima's functionality is often something seen only in vacuums that are unwieldy, heavy, or otherwise tough to manage. But the Optima is none of these. It is lightweight, coming in at under 15 pounds. Its handle is adjustable, so everyone - from your short children to your tall husband - can pitch in with the vacuuming duties. And it is ergonomically designed, so operating it, even for an extended period of time, won't make you feel like you have just visited contortionist school.

Also, like more expensive and heavier counterparts, the Optima does come with several attachments, so that you can vacuum stairs, upholstered furniture, and blinds with ease. Attachments are also easy to figure out, so you don't feel like you're putting together a Rubik's cube just to vacuum the dust bunnies under the bed.

But best of all, the Eureka Optima has a price that's tough to beat. Most stores offer the mighty dynamo of a vacuum in the $60 range. While a recent check in the San Francisco Bay Area showed it was slightly less than this at Bed Bath & Beyond, Costco had a slightly pricier option that also provided extra filters and an additional attachment, ostensibly justifying the additional cost. If you happen to live in an area where Bed Bath & Beyond regularly showers your mailbox with their well-known 20 per cent off coupons, then the Optima may very well check in closer to $50, an almost unheard-of price for a powerful vacuum cleaner that actually does the job.

Takeaways
  • 1. The Optima is very economical to purchase.
  • 2. The Optima is a very powerful vacuum cleaner.
  • 3. The Optima is easy to operate.
Did You Know?
The Eureka Optima can be purchased for close to $50.

I loved my vacuum until the wheels fell off too. I thought I would have to throw it out - but I was glad to read that customer service will back their product. I put the wheels back on so many times that I finally started using it without the wheels. But it was hard to push on the carpet and I was afraid I was scratching my wood floors. I am going to call customer service 800-282-2886 and request the new wheel base. I'm glad to hear that others have been successful since I really do like the vacuum.

Yeah I know, damn wheel! Mine's brand new, only 1 week old. I shall follow your advice & call Customer Service requesting a new wheel base & wheels! Great pick up though! To use the cliche, my vacuum really does suck - in a good way - LOL!

Yep, same happend to me. Very good customer service. For sure, next vacuum will be an EUREKA product. They will send me the base to fix the fallen loose wheel. FOR FREE!!! Dont even H+S. They really taken care of their customer, even on a 65 Dollar vacuum (like the Optima).

I contacted the Eureka Company about our broken wheels @ 800-282-2886 and they were sending us a whole new base for free as a replacement. The operator was extremely polite, didn't argue or put up a fuss. In fact, I thought they were just going to send us a replacement wheel and the operator said that they were sending us the whole base. Hopefully it will be easy to install.

My Eureka Optima has also lost it's wheels along with the Optima at a home I clean. Is there no way to fix these because the machine still works like a champ it's just frustrating to have the wheels go flying as you clean. Makes me afraid to purchase Eureka products again...

I purchased an Optima approximately 5 months ago and it has suddenly stopped sucking any dirt. I cleaned the filter and checked the clean out underneath the unit for a clog-none found. I am quite disappointed in the unit. There seems to be no "trouble shooting" guides.

I guess we're just a part of the crowd.... Broken wheel. I looked everywhere for a part and will try the phone number that came with the manual.

I have had my Optima for several years and love it. However, both wheels have now broken off. I also can not find replacement parts. Boo-hoo!

I really have liked the optima so much so that after buying one I purchased another. My first purchase of the optima the wheels fell off. So I purchased another optima (thinking it was a fluke) and the same thing happened again!!I love the light weight and the power but the wheels are a huge problem. There is no way to fix the wheels so your left with no other option but to purchase another vaccum. I regret I will not be purchasing another optima.

Like Helen Brashears (above), my Eureka Altima was a huge disappointment. Less than 6 months after purchase, the upper filter was clogging constantly. The dust cup may be easy to empty; but all that dust and particles are flying around your face while you're doing that. Dust residue remains on and in the dust cup. The manual states the filters should be replaced every 12 months for optimum performance; however, the eureka customer service reps would not even address that the owner's guide is in error. They just kept repeating that I could "change the filters every 12 months if I wanted to but eureka recommends every 6 months." I'm currently awaiting a response from the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval folks. Why their seal of approval is on this product is beyond me.

It's MUCH lighter than other vacuum cleaners and I like the easy knob to switch between floor and wand modes. But within 6 months, both wheels came off because the flimsy molded plastic tabs holding them in broke off - now the vacuum cleaner is UTTERLY USELESS without the wheels. I wouldn't recommend to anybody

We liked the Optima, it worked well, but the wheel fell of too. You need to replace the entire bottom of the unit to fix it. Problem is that I can't find the replacement part for bottom.

I bought a eureka altima in Nov 2006 less than 4 months ago. I hate it. It has gone on fire twice. it is too heavy to carry up stairs let alone vacumm them. I get very upset each time i have to use it as I have to get my hand into the chamber above empty tray. I paid almost $90's for this product that is rendered useless. I am afraid

I think you have a terrific product, But I think you need to work on the products wheels. After about a month of using it in my office the wheels keep coming off. That's the only thing I could complain about as far as this products goes. I think I should be sent another vaccumm!!
