Due to globalization, young people all over the world want an international education and many are choosing American schools. Some of these schools are privately owned and some are sponsored by the Department of State and the Department of Defense.
If you are a teacher and would like to spend some time working in another country and during that time, save money or spend money, this is an ideal opportunity. Your rent and sometimes utilities are paid for by the school. You will receive a fair salary and your actual living expenses may be very low depending on the local economy. In Egypt, I knew teachers who were able to save $15,000 or more in one year and then there were some who went to South Africa on winter break and Israel during spring break. One pair of teachers went on a round the world trip during summer vacation.
If you are interested in working in a particular country, you can research the schools in that area who hire teachers from overseas and then contact the school directly. You will increase your chances of getting a job overseas if you are flexible about where you will live and work. There are recruitment fairs given throughout the year. The agencies to contact if you are interested are Search Associates which sponsors recruitment fairs throughout the world and International School Services which is based in Princeton, New Jersey.
If you are hired to teach overseas, it is important that you stay in touch with the staff you met during the recruitment/hiring process and ask any and all questions you may have. Can I bring my dog? If I want to find my own apartment rather than the apartment you choose, can I do that and will it cost me extra money? Do you pay for my trip back to the US for summer vacation?
