One way to help your child care more about animals is to purchase an animal that your child cares about. If your child is interested in snakes or lizards you can purchase your child a new pet. If your child doesn't really care to own a pet you can take your child to the local zoo and check out the animals there. Show your child that it's always nice to do something good for animals.
Perhaps you can take your child down to your local park and feed the birds. Show your child that birds often times find it hard to find themselves food, especially the birds that are injured and birds that cannot get around very well. You can also take your child fishing to get them involved with fish. Practice catch and release and show your child that just because a fish is big, it doesn't mean that you need to eat it. You can let the fish go so that the fish can grow and raise it's family.
Try to show your child that animals have feelings just like people do. For example, if you hit your dog over and over again, the dog will probably not come around to see you anymore. If you take a wild dog that wont come to you and you feed it frequently, it will eventually start to trust and like you. By establishing a good relationship with animals you are helping your child communication and understand more about relationships. You are teaching your child to be compassionate which will often times help that child communicate with other children or adults. If you teach your child that animals should be beaten and they have no feelings, your child might grow up thinking that they should do the same to other children.
