Winter and the holidays are always a fun time for children of all ages but of course the younger kids seem to enjoy it just a bit more than everyone else. I think the excitement of Christmas coming plays a huge part in the added excitement. That being the case, kids love to help decorate for the upcoming holiday with handmade crafts they have made themselves. As an adult I find a special joy in sharing time with children making crafts to display. This is one of the easiest crafts I have found that can be the most fun for you and your child.

Things you will need:

Styrofoam white balls in three different sizes (for the snowman body)

Wiggly eyes

Popsicle sticks (or better yet sticks from your yard work well too)

Glue

Felt

Small sticks from your yard for arms.

Scissors

White Glitter (optional)

Plastic Wrap (optional)

Small Paint Brush (optional)

Step One: Take one of the larger balls and cut it to make it flat on one side. This is to allow your snowman to stand on his own.

Step Two: Take the Popsicle stick and push it through the center of the large ball, and then take a slightly smaller ball and place on top of it. Then a smaller ball on top of that. You can already see your snowman starting to take shape.

Step Three: This is for the optional glitter. If you did not want to use glitter skip this step and move on to step four. Pour the glitter on a sheet of plastic wrap you have spread on a flat surface, brush on a small amount of glue over your Styrofoam balls and roll them in the glitter. This will give your snowman a twinkle just like real snow when the light hits it.

Step Four: Glue on your wiggly eyes to the snowman's face. Let him dry before you give him a shake or the eyes might fall off.

Step Five: Cut out shapes from the felt to dress up your snowman.

Step Six: Push the sticks you have for arms in the correct spot and then find somewhere to display your snowman.

When my children were smaller they loved to make little snowman families so let your imagination run wild with these. This craft project is also nice for teachers in your grade school classes. It's a something quick that kids can do without a ton of mess for you to clean up.

I wish my kids were still little. I miss the smell of Elmer's and construction paper!
