Hatred, as defined by Webster's Dictionary, is "prejudiced hostility or animosity." It is an ugly word anyway you look at it and yet it is a feeling that seems to be running rampant today. I find that fact not only depressing and discouraging, but down right frightening.

I was always taught that it is inappropriate to hate anyone. My grandmother said that it was all right to hate things, but never to hate people. When I was small I didn't quite grasp the intricacies of what she was saying. Today, I do.

Democrats hate the Republications. Muslims hate Americans. Atheists hate Christians. The poor hate the rich. The list goes on and on. Even school rivalries have degraded into disturbing situations. Less than a year ago, if you had asked me if a situation like the Jenna Six could happen in today's world, I would have said that I didn't think so. I would, of course, been wrong.

I'm often taken aback by the level of hatred that I hear spewed every day. What happen to the days when you could disagree with someone's point of view without attacking the individual personally? What is with the current attitude that that if you don't tow a particular line of thinking, then you don't deserve to live?

If you think I am over exaggerating that statement, I must urge to pay closer attention. If you do, I promise you will quickly understand what I am saying. It's in the newspapers. It's on the radio and television.

I'm not a real fan of conservative talk show host Sean Hannity but I heard something not too long ago that really blew my mind. So I did some research and I have to say that what I found made me cringe in abject terror.

It began when I didn't bother to change the radio channel in the car. I normally listen to music when I drive but for some reason I didn't change the channel. Sean Hannity was on and said he was going to play some of the messages from the "Hannity Hate Line." I didn't know what that was but it certainly caught my attention.

Takeaways
  • Our world has become too full of hatred.
  • Many people today seem incapable of disagreeing with others without attacking them personally.
  • We must join together in our refusal to spread hatret further.

I agree with your grandmother's sentiments about how we should hate things, but not people. I for one feel no prejudice or hatred towards another person, especially as I am often stereotyped and judged based upon my nationality, accent and ethnicity by a lot of Americans anyway. Sophie

Hate stems from fear. If we change our own attitude about people we will change the world one person at a time. When I was in the midst of my Divorce I had Hate in my heart. I was told to pray for this individual. I don't know if she ever new I prayed for her but I got better. Thank You fer sharin'. ;-}}>

As children, we weren't allowed to use the word "hate", even in reference to food preferences. Maybe my mother was on to something...

I agree that there is so much hatred going on in this world. Everyday, you see lesser friendly people...as if everyone is out to take on others. Even with just a stare that can be misconstrued leading to fights. Our society is getting worse each day, it's sad that our kids are growing up in these times :(

Charlotte, great article and welcome to my world. Growing up in areas refered to as "the hood", playing fair is not the norm so you can only imagine how fights go. True, hatred is ugly. Hopefully we'll all mature to a point of realizing its just not worth the pain and angst to keep it going.

Charlotte, great article. I agree with you. We all have the right and reason to disagree, but why spew vitriol? This won't change anyone's mind and it just spreads hatred. It doesn't matter who said what to who, what matters is how each of us takes responsibility for our own actions. We can choose our own words and responses. Why choose hate? Choose respect, reason, and responsibility.:-)

Sorry, got long winded. As I was saying, I will be truly sorry if we cannot agree to disagree and still remain friends in AC. I respect you, your writing, and your opinion even if I don't agree 100% I would hate to stop learning from you or having discussions with you. Other than that, I don't know what else to say.

Alice, I totally respect your opinion. However, being a Christian I can tell you that none of my friends have ever said a hateful word against Muslims. Are there some that do? Absolutely! But you cannot label a whole group for the actions of some. As for hating evil, again I agree. But I consider evil a "thing;" not a person. Can I person do evil things? Again, yes. I can hate what he or she does without hating the person. The person, I prefer to pity. As for Republicans attacking Democrats more than the other way around, I have to disagree. I think both parties are equally guilty. I hear and watch both sides and that is why I refuse to have anything to do with either party currently in power be it in the White House or Congress. BUT I don't hate either side. I just want them to stop acting like children and get to the work that we taxpayers pay them to do. I also believe that there are people in both parties that care about other people. I will be truly sorry if we can't agree to disa

Democrats have been attacked by Republicans much more than the other way around. I am not affiliated with either party, but due to pro-peace activism, I have been called stuff, like "bleeding-heart, , hippie, commie, leftie, liberal" and more. I have yet to hear or see a Democrat attack Republicans with such language. "A word causing pain makes anger come up" and when people show their "prejudiced hostility" it does tend to inflame passions. Why the vast majority of Republicans hate Democrats for caring about other human beings and the earth is beyond my ability to understand.

"Love does not rejoice in evil" the opposite of love is hate, so I find it acceptable to hate evil and the people who do evil deeds. I have seen hatred grow in direct proportion to GWB's leading the citizens in a "culture of hate", especially towards Muslims. None of the Muslims I personally know hate Christians, but most every Christian I know spews hatred at them. Even the Ku Klux Klan claims Christianity and it is sad that people are not aware of their continued activity in the USA. But then, not everyone gets to live in Klan territory and experience it first hand.

I am not familiar with the show you write about but I had a run in with some racism recently that blew me away! It's 2007 for crying out loud, aren't we over this yet?

Great article and I totally agree..we must stamp out hatred..I don't understand why people chose to be that way when loving people is such a better feeling
