Wedding invitations are, obviously, a must have, but the extreme cost of some invitations these days are NOT a must have! There is no reason that you can’t make your own invitations. For a very simple style, you can purchase specialty paper at the office supply store or online, that is specially made for making your own invitations at home with your printer.

For beach weddings, if you want something a little more elaborate, there are several directions you can go. How about a truly unique message in a bottle invitation, or a pail of sand and shells with the invitation included? You can purchase bottles to make message in a bottle invitations at thrift stores, craft stores, or online stores. There is no rule saying they all have to be the same type of bottle, so feel free to mix and match. There are also many online suppliers from which you can order plastic bottles that will cut down the weight, and thus the mailing cost of the invitations. If you choose to do mini pails, you can also find those at craft stores and online stores. Choose a parchment style paper, and print out your invitation with a font that you like, roll it up, and insert it into the bottle or pail. Add some sand, shells, or other décor if you like.

For a fancier look, you can burn the edges of the paper with lighter, tie raffia around the neck of the bottle or handle of the pail, or use ribbons. If you are concerned about sand spilling and moving around. Mix some sandbox sand with some small shells and white school glue. Then spoon it into the bottle or pail, and when the glue dries, it will be clear and hold the sand in place.

Takeaways
  • Wedding invitations are a must, but the extreme cost is not!
  • You can burn the edges of the paper for an old look.
  • Use mini seashells to decorate.
