Hotel El Convento in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico is a former Carmelite convent. The Carmelite convent has been situated in the walled city of Old San Juan since 1651. It is said the the founder and Mother Superior of the convent walks the halls of the former convent, along with her cloister of nuns.

Dona Ana de Lansos y Menendez de Valdez was a noblewoman who lost her husband in a battle with the Dutch. Dona Ana de Lansos y Melendez de Valdez chose to devote herself to God after her husband's death The noblewoman donated her home, its adjoining land and all of her possessions to have a convent erected on the site where she had lived with her beloved husband.

The convent, The Monastery of Our Lady Carmne of San Jose, was inaugurated in 1651. The convent was better known as the Carmelite Convent. Dona Ana was the first to enter the cloister and became Mother Superior

Today the site is the home of Hotel El Convento, located in the heart of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. The spirits of Dona Ana and her cloister of nuns visit the hotel and walk the halls in silent prayer. The ghosts are silent, the only sound being the swishing sounds of their long robes as they walk.

History of Hotel El Convento in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico

The former convent is located in the walled city of Old San Juan. The Carmelite convent was founded in 1651 and was vacated by the nuns in 1903.

The property was nearly destroyed in the1950's, but the Puerto Rican tourism and cultural officials and millionaire Robert Woolworth purchased the property in 1962. The new ownesr converted the convent into a European-style luxury hotel. In 1995, the hotel was returned to its former beauty with a $15 million restoration. The restoration accentuated the Spanish features of the original convent.

Went to Old San Juan last week... El Convento is a nice old hotel right in the heart of town.. No Beach! Way over priced! Historicly very interesting but I'd rather stay at the Hilton or Condado..
