We all get the urge to redecorate our bedroom from time to time. Maybe a new color of paint on the walls or fresh wallpaper is what you have your eye on. This may necessitate splurging on a new color and style of comforter. What if your bed is Queen size and the rest of the family's beds are only Twin? Is your old comforter well broken in, but not quite ready to be discarded for trash. Instead of letting it sit in the linen closet taking up space, consider recycling it in one of these practical ways.

Keep the old comforter in your car. If you should ever break down, this comforter will come in handy keeping the family safe from the elements until help arrives. It will be easy to have an impromptu picnic in the park if you have a soft and cozy comforter to sit on and enjoy a beautiful day outdoors. Traveling home from Grandma's in the dead of winter? It may be easier to get your kids to fall asleep on the ride if they have a snuggly comforter to cuddle up under.

Use the old comforter for camping. You don't want to take your best linens camping where they can get wet or dirty. Store your old comforter with your camping gear and you know you will have a comfortable night's sleep in your tent.

Let the kids use the old comforter for play time. An old comforter makes a nifty magic carpet, a tent when strewn across two dining room chairs and anything else your children's imaginations can conjure up.

Donate the old comforter to the local Thrift Store. A family in need of a helping hand may just be looking for an inexpensive and clean comforter to keep them warm during the cold nights of winter. Thrift stores provide needy families with necessary household items at a deep discount, so you can feel good about the fact that you helped to make one family's winter a little more warm and comfortable.

Cut up the old comforter for patches. The color and material of your old comforter may be just perfect to keep on hand to patch clothing items in your home that need a quick patch up to get some more life out of them.

Great ideas! It is always nice to know that others are looking for ways to reuse objects that would otherwise be thrown away.

Keeping it in the car is a great idea. Melanie's idea is also great because it happens to be just what I need since I promised the kids I would get cushions for them to stretch out on in the winter since we took up the carpeting.

I just gave an old comforter to a thrift store, one of your suggestions for how to recycle the comforter, but I never even thought of any of your other ideas! I should have thought about keeping it in the car; although I'm rarely on the highway these days, our winters are VERY cold! And I know our animal shelter could use them too! GREAT ideas!

Great Article! We use many of these ideas in our home as well. I love the stocking idea, it doesn't even have to be red/green, it would be a nice way to preserve a special blanket & turn it into a keepsake.

Great ideas. I make floor pillows with mine - just fold the big ones in quarters and cover with a sturdy fabric. Great for lounging kids.
