Full military benefits are accorded to an active duty member's immediate family members by virtue of their relationsip to the active duty sponsor, to include spouses, children and in some cases, to dependent elderly or infirm parents who live with the family. They can shop anywhere on base, obtain fuel, and access recreational services for free or at a reduced cost. But are extended family members also allowed to shop from the military installation?

Military ID Card

A military ID card is a lot like a passport. It is a very valuable document. It not only allows every ID card holder to enter the military installation. The ID card also proves that the holder can shop and obtain services that they may require while on base. When asked for proof of identity, this card will show that the person is entitled to access services. But extended family members such as siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles and parents are not considered immediate relatives of the active duty member and are therefore not issued with ID cards so that they can have access to the military installation. But relatives can enter the military installation if they are sponsored on by either the active dutry member or one of their immediate family members who has an ID card.

Shopping Privileges

Takeaways
  • Eligible ID card holders can access shopping facilities and much more
  • People can lose their military privileges if they buy merchandise and then sell it for profit
  • Gifts can be purchased for friends and extended family members
Did You Know?
Active duty sponsors must inform their immediate relatives of their responsibilities once they obtain an ID card

It would be great if you and Len could use US military installations too, Susie. But as my husband explained, you can only access the services from British or American babses, but not both. Sophie

Thanks for the comments. I used to try and keep it a secret that my husband was an American servicemember because once people knew they would try and ask me for 'favours'. They never got any! Sophie

Great information! My father was military and those benefits are sacred. My poor mother was constantly asked by friends, not just extended family, to purchase things for them, she'd politely refuse.
