Americans Feeling "Bush Fatigue," Poll Finds
With little more than a year remaining in his term, it seems that President Bush might want to get out while he still can. Results of a poll released Friday revealed that a majority of Americans surveyed disapprove of President Bush's overall job performance, and nearly
three-quarters of the group were opposed to the manner in which he has handled the war in Iraq. Americans also disapproved of Congress's performance and found Hilary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani to be likely presidential choices in 2008.
The three-day poll, issued by Strategic Vision, LLC, of Atlanta, surveyed 1,200 likely voters in Pennsylvania. Participants were asked to identify their party affiliations for the poll, and 48 percent (576) said they were Democrats; 42 percent (504) said they were Republicans; and 10 percent (120) said they were either Independents or had a non-major party affiliation. Poll results had a margin of error of three percentage points.
The poll focused on several areas: the performance of President Bush, strategy in Iraq, and candidates for the 2008 presidential election.
The participants were mostly unified in their disapproval of the president in a variety of areas. A staggering 67 percent disapproved of Bush's overall performance, with only 24 percent expressing approval. The area in which Bush fared the worst in participant's minds was the handling of the war in Iraq: only 18 percent approved, while 74 percent expressed their disapproval.
"The president's poll numbers are anemic and his hold among Republicans is tenuous," said David E. Johnson, Strategic Vision co-founder and CEO. "Without support from his base, the president cannot recover his poll position."
