Because student attention and class participation are generally major factors in the grading process, addressing the distraction of cell phone technology has become a frequent necessity for teachers. Dr. Claire Summers, an associate professor at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, said in an Oct. 5 press release that there's an ongoing battle between teachers and students over classroom cell phone use that "has become a substantial problem." She said there's no disputing that students continually distracted by cell phones are unable to engage in the class as fully as others.

In times past, bored students generally distracted themselves with doodling, passing notes, whispering and giggling about anything that came to mind. Today, with what seems to be endless wireless technologies and the ubiquitous cell phone, students have other means to distract themselves or cure boredom. Between text messaging and surfing the Internet, there's literally an endless amount of material available to keep their minds out of the classroom.

In an NEA online article, "Should We Ban Cell Phones in School?," several teachers expressed their thoughts and opinions. A fourth-grade teacher in Tucson, Ariz., believes cell phones should "absolutely be banned from school." The teacher said cell phones are "nothing but a disruption to class instruction. The student (if he or she is waiting for a call) thinks about nothing but receiving that call, therefore blocking out anything that is being said, and it's simply not a necessity for being successful in school."

On the other hand, a teacher in the Northern Tioga School District in Pennsylvania said that cell phones and other electronic devices can be a distraction, but "students need to learn when and where a cell phone can be appropriate....This is one of those life lessons we can teach them. Technology is a wonderful and useful tool when used properly."

i would not say usage of cell phone is always distractive. classroom is not the place that cell phone may be allowed to talk on or to text at all.

josh....it may not be a distraction for you but for some people who hear your phone vibrate it, they might lose concentration and same when teachers see you texting, they notice that and loose there place and than they can't get the message across properly

I'm a jr in HS and at my school phones are allowed between classes but not in the classroom. Basically every student still bring them to class anyway which is a huge distraction to me and the user. I sometimes wonder why kids are constantly using and checking their cell phones. I mean honestly, get a life! It's not as if they can't check their phones after school. I feel like phones should be banned from school altogether for one major reason. Sometimes when I'm casually talking to someone in the hall, this person I was holding a conversation with will get a call. Instantly, it's as if I'm not even there anymore. Kids seem to think their cell phone has the priority. I can understand if it's an emergency... but honestly, how often is that the case? I feel that cell phones are completely unnecessary for a teen to enjoy their high school experience. I don't have a cell phone, and I'm perfectly happy about it. I tell all my friends that if they can't reach me at home, I'm b

There is nothing wrong with the cell phones unless the students are using it for worse... Phones should not be banned so that in case of emergency, they can use it... As a matter of fact, cell phones er useful especially if they ferget their projects or homework...

I use a phone to text in the middle of class all the time, but I still get A's, how is that a distraction? I'm doing fine...

As much as I like to believe I can catch that quick, downward glance into the hoodie pocket, I also realize that many students have become quite adept at texting when my attention is turned. At least with texting, the student involved is usually the only one distracted from learning. However, since texting in class seems to be on the rise and since it can be used as a cheating tool, I have actually researched and toyed with the idea of buying a cell phone jammer. They are currently illegal in the US but at least I can smile while I envision the look on a few of my student's faces as they try and figure out why their cell phones never seem to work in one particular classroom.

As in school so in business. Undisciplined people will do it no matter what you try. Confiscation of personal property is simply un-American. Well-written though!

As a teacher, I can say that cell phones in the classroom are a huge problem. In college, you should be able to trust your students not to have them and you can hardly monitor it anyway (especially in big lecture halls). But in primary school and high school, students are far too irresponsible and constantly bring and use cell phones even against their school district's rules. Part of the problem is that students are evolving with the technology. Some students can type a text message with their phone in their pocket; then they just quickly slip it out and glance down to read the reply. There's a new ringtone called "mosquito" that supposedly most people above a certain age can't hear, but students hear fine. I can barely hear it, but it's hard to notice. I think they should impose stricter punishments on kids who violate the rules by permanently confiscating their cell phones or something.

I agree, it is a distraction however I am not sure anything is going to keep mobile phones out of the classrooms. I remember in Japan when I went to High School it was a really bad problem and that was about ten years ago!

I wondered about this with all the cell phones that I've seen in the hands of children as young as seven and eight.

Not just in classrooms either. They are annoying everywhere.
