Urethane foam can be used in place of air in tractor tires. These foam-filled tires have a few disadvantages when compared to other types. Some of these disadvantages include weight, steering, and comfort. This article will discuss some of the disadvantages of foam-filled tires.

Weight

One of the first disadvantages of foam-filled tires is the weight they add to your vehicle. These tires are much heavier than most other types. While this additional weight can provide stability, it will also cause the foam-filled tires to create ruts and dents in the ground.

Steering

Another disadvantage of foam-filled tires deals with steering system. Since these tires are heavier than other types, it will put more stress on your hubs, rims, and wheel bearings. Foam-filled tires will also stress your front axle whenever you drive over bumps or lift loads. Extra stress placed on the vehicle's transmission can also lead to future breakdowns.

Comfort

Foam-filled tires are also less comfortable than other types. Most types of foam have very little flex once they have set in. This means that your tires will be harder and give you a rougher ride. However, foam-filled tires are a little more comfortable than solid tires.

Damage

One of the next disadvantages of foam-filled tires deals with damage. These tires can easily damage in tough environments. If the tire is damaged enough that foam starts to leak out of it, you will have to have it replaced. Foam-filled tires are incapable of being repaired. Also, you will likely have to buy a new rim when the tire becomes damaged.

Light-Duty Tires

One of the next disadvantages of foam-filled tires is that you can't use them with light-duty tires. The foam filling will not make these tires stronger. They may also put more stress on light-duty tires than they are capable of handling. Therefore, you can only use the heavy-duty variety when you want foam-filled tires.
