On October 24, 2007, people around the world and around our own nation will be celebrating the day in 1945 when the United Nations Charter first became activated. In large cities and small towns there will be study groups, workshops, commemorative ceremonies, dinners and luncheons all in honor of the U. N. In many places you will see the flying of the U.N. flag with its symbols of international peace . Even if your particular community is not sponsoring such a celebration you still have an opportunity to celebrate United Nations Day with Amnesty International and help the world to move in the direction of peace, which of course is the perfect way to support and reflect upon what the U. N. is all about.

Amnesty International- Today in more than 150 countries there is a chapter or office representing the international organization called Amnesty International. This group is made up of some 2.2 million members around the world who are working to prevent abuses of the human rights that are include in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

This organization is unusual in that it works diligently to remain outside of national or international politics. It's membership includes people of varying nationalities, religious beliefs and racial types. Amnesty International concentrates its human and financial resources in helping to maintain human rights wherever they are threatened. To this end their field work involves both investigation and action on the basis of their discoveries. In 2007 Amnesty International is expressing considerable concern for the human rights that seem threatened in the Sudan area called Darfur.
