An Army of one, perhaps. Men and women who have served in our military have professionalism and leadership skills built in. Veterans are better prepared to handle the stress and responsibilities that are associated with corporate executive positions. The training veterans receive is equivalent to years of experience on the job.

In today's increasingly global economy, shrinking workforce, and rapidly changing technology there is a very high demand for corporate talent. Couple this demand with a military that is becoming more sophisticated and you have a pool of talent that is adept at problem solving and are skilled leaders.

A few companies, such as The Home Depot, GE and USAA in particular, seek out military veterans for their workforce. All three companies feel the veterans are well rounded individuals that can handle most situations thrown at them. These companies all share a desire to hire employees that can handle nearly any situation thrown at them. They see veterans as key pieces to their management teams, people who are able to lead and delegate, people who not only can tell an employee what to do but who can also show them how to do it. They see veterans as the nearly perfect upper level management team player. Veterans are seeing their military skills translate directly into jobs in the corporate world. For example, an officer trained to make decisions in a chaotic environment might be best suited as a business architect whose job is to review and analyze business processes.

The Home Depot for example, is ranked second by G.I. Jobs magazine as the most friendly employer and appreciates the strengths the veterans have to offer. The Home Depot has hired over 50,000 veterans since 2004 and frequently praises the veterans for their focus, commitment to excellence and discipline. The Home Depot sees veterans and their spouses as adaptable, talented, highly motivated, creative and reliable workers that can contribute to the success of the company. The Home Depot has a website specifically geared towards veterans looking for employment, visit www.careers.homedepot.com/military for more information.
