There are so many diapers to choose from and over the years, as a foster mom I have tried everything from the most expensive to the least expensive off the wall diapers. Ultimately I have chosen Pampers Swaddlers to use exclusively for my preemies and small newborns but as they get bigger and have more output, I switch to Huggies Natural Fit as I find them to be close to softness as the Swaddler and very absorbent and I have never had a nighttime leak through using Huggies Natural Fit.
While I am not debating as to whether other diapers are as absorbent or not, my opinion is that a baby should be in the softest, most comfortable absorbing diaper they can be in and since I do not use cloth diapers I have found these two diaper brands, Pampers Swaddlers and Huggies Natural Fit to be superior and I use them exclusively for every baby that comes into our home unless there is an allergic reaction to which I have also not seen, knock on wood!
I find that for infants, especially preemies, that the super soft Pampers Swaddler diapers are superior. They have a super soft cover with gentle elastic for the legs and the inside of the diaper that actually is touching their skin feels as close to cloth as you can possibly get and still have adequate absorption for those times when you can't change right away or when baby sleeps for several hours between changing. They seemingly are very comfortable to new babies.
I have found that if the Swaddler doesn't fit just right and cover high enough up the back, a messy dirty diaper may leak up. They are also a bit more expensive than other brands but once you feel how soft they are, you just won't want to put your baby in anything else in the beginning. At about 2 months or whenever baby begins to eat more and sleep longer at night, I switch to Huggies Natural Fit since they are very snug and still a bit softer than other brands and very absorbant. The swaddlers are best for babies under 10lbs. as far as holding in wetness for longer periods of time. But, if you change regularly during the day then they are perfect regarding softness and comfort the baby.
