London has an amazing number of, well, amazing museums! Many of them are free, and any one of them is worth a look. I would suggest you get a few books and look them up and plan which one or two would be the most enjoyable for your family. There is no way you can visit them all in one trip and but I think it would be a mistake not to take in any.

BRITISH MUSEUM
This is most popular attraction in London visited by more than six million people per year!

The BRITISH MUSEUM contains fragments of the seven wonders of the world amongst the countless other items in it's two and a half miles of galleries! There are treasures from the early histories of China, Egypt, Greece, Rome and others. Once room not to miss is the Mexican Collection where you enter a re-created temple to view the objects. This seems to be popular with the school tours so you might want to hit this early mornings or after 3:00 pm to avoid that.

Another not-to-be-missed area is the HSBC Money Gallery where the history of money is traced as well as showing the changing forms of payment. This is a very interesting area of the museum. My kids favorite part is the Egypt section ~ I think they could spend a day there!

Note: You CAN take photos and videos inside the BRITISH MUSEUM which is nice.

Hours are 10 am - 5 pm Monday - Saturday and Sunday 12 noon - 6 pm.

CABINET WAR ROOMS
This is a great museum for history buffs. This is one of my husband's favorites but then again, he has a real interest in all of this and my son seems to be following in his footsteps. History was never a favorite subject of mine but none the less I did find this an interesting place to visit.

The CABINET WAR ROOMS is located in the basement of government offices and were in operation from August 27, 1939 through the surrender of the Japanese in September 1945. The museum is set up as if a cabinet meeting was about to take place. When you go through the Map Room it appears as it did then, with people working and the same maps and information on the walls and desks. On the main map, all the pins, flags and symbols are those left there when the place was abandoned in 1945. while in here, you can hear one of Churchill's broadcast being played.

I love the British Museum. I could spend all day there. Unfortunately, I don't have all day to spend in one museum when visiting London. It's just a quick trip before heading off home to Suffolk. Sophie

Fragments of the 7 wonders of the world? Now that's the kind of thing we'd tell our kids- what would happen if everyone did it? So why is a museum doing it?
