Adjusting to Terrorism

Since the attack in our country on September 11, 2001, the United States has been forced to face the fact that our country is not impervious to attacks by enemies from foreign soil. This revelation has caused our law enforcement agencies to reconsider the relaxed attitude toward our border security. This nation's citizens have also come to realize that tighter border security along with the identification and removal of legal aliens are a top priority if we are going to effectively control and combat terrorism. According to the Center for immigration studies" Knowledgeable Americans have come to understand that our welcoming immigration policies are easily exploited by terrorists and that porous borders and lax immigration enforcement are no longer an option. With at least 8 million illegal aliens living in the United States and nearly one million new aliens arriving each year, the potential for terrorists entering the United States undetected is high."(CIS, 2004)Confronting the problem
Unfortunately, because of political and business concerns, this country's leaders have failed to appropriately address the issue of the illegal immigration as it applies to terrorism. Terrorists enjoy the ability to move back and forth across our borders undetected. The same terrorists, once they have crossed illegally into our country, are able to enjoy and benefit from our open, free society. It is impossible to defeat an enemy unless you can identify who the enemy is. Until we as a nation are willing to take on the task of identifying and prosecuting individuals who continue to violate the laws of our country, terrorism will flourish.
