When I take a look around today, the world I view is a far cry from the oppressive America of the 1950's and 1960's. This previous generation was riddled with wrongs on so many levels. Schools, jobs, and even restrooms were not open to everyone. There can be no mistaking the discrimination of our parents' and grandparents' generation. Yet, here we are today in 2007, a greatly evolved society. There is no doubt that we as a people have changed. Thanks to our parents, this generation has been taught to view people as just that - people. To see others based on nothing other than their character. I do not pretend that everyone everywhere has taken up this banner and believes in the ideologies of John Locke. Nor do I pretend that there aren't some bad apples who continue to walk amongst us everyday. Yet, if the truth is told, these bad apples will always exist. There will always be a few who choose poorly, no matter how much we educate or inform. Still, we are a new society, not raised with the notion to hate based solely on skin color or gender, but raised to determines a person's worth by their character and actions. This change is something that we, as Americans, can hold on to and be proud of. We are a new America.

When I look at the topic of affirmative action, I see and idea and a law that was created for the right reasons; to assist those who needed help. Make no mistake, during the 1960's this law was greatly needed. With the legislation of affirmative action, a new era emerged. This period was one where people would be legally bound to aid a certain group of people; minorities. However, the day has come to wipe away the transgressions of our forefathers. Now is the time to forgive and allow this generation to move forward without shackles attached to their feet. I cannot believe that present day prejudice is the best answer for past inequality. We have moved beyond this and are ready move into the next chapter. The laws of affirmative action are outdated and need to be laid to rest. It is time to close the book of inequality and the only question is; are you ready?

Great writing. However, I think we have made remarkable progress, but still have a long way to go. Unfortunately, in many places if it weren't for affirmative action, many kids wouldn't have the chance they deserve.

Good writing----unfortunately we still have prejudices---epecially in our schools. I live in Los Angeles where there are lots of race related fights on our school campuses. there is much to be learned yet, but we have made preogress like you stated.
