Saltwater fish tanks are also harder to come by. You must buy everything individually such as the light, canister filter, etc. With both tanks you will need to purchase substrate and decorations. Saltwater fish tank decorations are the most expensive because you will probably purchase live rock which is about $5 per pound. If you have a 100 gallon tank you will spend about $500 in live rock. You will also need to purchase the saltwater fish which will cost an average of $15 per fish.
Freshwater fish are very inexpensive. You can purchase a fish for around $2. You can purchase all of the fish that you need for your fish tank with about $15 versus a saltwater fish tank which you will spend about $15 per fish. When it comes to buying fish you will spend a lot more money purchasing saltwater fish.
You will also probably want to purchase coral and you will spend about $30 per coral. You will also want to purchase supplements which will cost about $6 per bottle of supplement which will last you a couple of months. If you have a freshwater fish tank you will save at least $6 a month from not purchasing supplements.
With saltwater fish tanks they will require a lot more work. You will need to clean the live rock and the sand. You will have to pull off all of the algae off of the rock and keep up on the green hair algae problem that may occur. You will have less algae with a freshwater fish tank. With both fish tanks you will need to wait at least 30 days before you place any fish in the saltwater or freshwater fish tanks.
