Being able to adjust your motivational workplace or study environment to suit your ever-changing moods as they come along is a key component in achieving writing success. One great way to go about creating your motivational writing area, or room, is to make efforts to tend to each of the five senses. Here are some examples:

Appeal to your sense of smell
Use a form of aromatherapy to soothe your senses and stimulate your brain activity. Two great ways to alter your setting in order to appeal to your sense of smell include incense and essential oils. Both of these types of products are manufactured in probably hundreds of aromatic variations to cater to all mood types. A good idea is to purchase a couple of different scents in whatever form you enjoy and alternate them according to how you feel at the beginning of each new writing or work study session.

To prepare for an adaptable motivational workplace or study environment, I suggest looking into aromatherapy online and selecting at least one scent that is energizing and stimulating and one that is relaxing and anxiety relieving. For me, the Nag Champa, in either the incense or the essential oil forms, tends to amazingly work well to achieve both reactions.

Oils can be exposed into the air through various types of diffusers, most which use some sort of glass dish that sits above a lit candle which heats and circulates the oil. Sticks of incense are placed in incense holders and lit at the top.

Keep in mind if you choose the incense form of aromatherapy that the stick, as it slowly burns, tends to make a bit of a mess as the ashes fall. I recommend purchasing a holder that takes into account where the residuals will fall. The last thing you want to do in the middle of writing a killer sentence is to have to get up and worry about cleaning.

Stellar ideas. When my workspace, which is very small, becomes messy, it is very distracting.

When I was single, I lived in a two bedroom apartment, using one bedroom as an office that I rearranged or redecorated several times a year to alter my moods and enhance my "creativity". Now I'm with a family and being in California, can't afford a large enough place to leave me a room of my own. What I do instead is leave very early for work. Once I get there, I relax in my car and think about writing possibilities. For sure, sometimes I fall asleep while doing that, but some of my best ideas for fiction have come to me in dreams, so that also helps.

Great tips. I think the idea of using your "senses" to create a workspace is wonderful. I'm going to try it.

Great article! My scent is vanilla. My Music is a variety of reggae, r&b, gospel, soft rock...whatever...all positive. My air - the fresh outdoors air, no matter the weather. My caffeine/drink of choice is Mountain Dew or Vault Zero. My visuals - pics of hubby and children surround my desk and they're usually all physically in my presence as well. :-)
