"Boots" Berry, born in room 1840 at Green Mountain Inn in 1840, was a local legend. He was the son of the horseman and a chambermaid at the inn. Boots entered his father's trade, caring for the horses and outfitting them for the stagecoach.
One day the horses on the stagecoach team bolted. Boots bravely risked his life to stop the team of horses from running away. He became known as a local hero. The good part of that was he never had to buy his own drinks at the bars in the county. The bad part was that he became a drunk, lost his job and began to wander. He traveled to New Orleans, where he landed in jail. In jail a fellow inmate taught him to tap dance.
Eventually Boots wandered back to Stowe, VT. A blizzard hit the region. A small girl got stranded on the inn of the room. Boots remembered a secret passage and managed to rescue the child from the roof. Unfortunately Boots slipped off fell off the roof and was killed. Ironically he had been standing on the roof over room 302, the very room he was born in 62 years earlier.
There have reports from guests that the sound of tap dancing can be heard on the third floor on stormy days.
