A lot of people equate romance to certain times of the year like Valentine's Day or special occasions like a wedding anniversary. That's a real shame because romance is something that all of us should want to keep alive all year long.

My husband and I met and fell in love when I was just 15. We've been together for 43 years now, married for 38 of them. Consequently, it can be a challenge to keep the romance in our marriage alive. However, since I intend to go to the grave with the same husband, I work very hard to make sure the sparks keep coming.

Luckily my husband and I love a lot of the same things. One of things we most love to do together is have a nice dinner and watch a classic romantic movie. Since we can't always afford to go out, I often make a romantic dinner at home.

Romance, however, means a lot of different things to different people. I'm a totally "girly girl" so I like candlelight, flowers, wine, and a full five or seven course meal.

My husband, on the other hand, is all man. He'll do romance my way, for me, without uttering a word of discontent. But his idea of romance for himself is much less frilly or frou frou. He's just as happy with a bowl of chili and football game.

The point I'm making here is that, in creating a romantic evening for your significant other, you need to keep in mind what he or she considers to be romantic. Let's take a look at romance from differing perspectives in a kind of "He Says, She Say" point of view.

She Says:

Never forget the candles! Every woman knows that she looks more beautiful in candlelight. And gentelmen, whether you know it or not, your lady always wants to look beautiful for you.

Flowers are optional. Some women like them while others could care less. However, if you know for a fact that your lady loves them, why not splurge to put a smile on her face? You don't have to go with the most expensive bouquet. Roses can be costly for a "just because" occasion. However, most florists keep a certain amount of mixed floral bouquets on hand at all times and they are generally not that expensive.

Takeaways
  • What a man considers romantic can be vastly different from a woman's point of view.
  • Men, never forget the candles because women know they look more beautiful by candlelight.
  • Women, if he wants to watch a game, watch it with him and join him in his element.

Charlotte: I LOVED this article. I have 2 Collectibles booths, and one is called Romantic At Heart, and that is what I am. I enjoy putting extra touches into candlelight meals. My husband loves the romance. I even buy 2 dishes of special china in a thrift store, so that we can enjoy lots of different plates for meals. I love flowers, scented candles, soft music (instrumental or Kenny G.)My house is decorated Victorian, and my husband thinks all the feminine things are very sexy! I love all your wonderful ideas! (Especially the rose petals in the bath!) Great Article!

I dunno, I think you are going to a lot of extra trouble to satisfy your man. Grill a porterhouse steak, fix a baked potato, buy him a six-pack of his favorite beer and let him watch the game in peace and you've got a week's worth of guaranteed back rubs.

Excellent article. It's obvious that you know what you are talking about. After that many years of being married to the same man I think you qualify as an expert!
