Categorized by their fierce wind strength using the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, Hurricanes are a threat to everyone living along the water. While smaller hurricanes appear less threatening they often cause the worst damage in certain areas. Tropical storms are just as dangerous since they can inflict severe damage and flooding. What do you do in a Hurricane or Severe Storm? The best defense against the storm is to be prepared! Here are several tips to keep in mind.
1. Have a plan, and discuss it with your family.
Discussing what to do in a storm is important, especially with children. Do not be afraid to tell your children the truth about the potential dangers of a hurricane; it may save their lives, and yours.
2. Have a safe location where everyone should go in case of a hurricane. If you live in a mobile home or are camping in a RV; get out and seek shelter elsewhere. The safest rooms are those like a bath room where you can hide in the tub with blankets over you for protection from flying debris. Another good spot is a closet. Be sure to stay away from windows that can be blown out in a severe storm.
3. If you plan leave during the storm, know your escape route. Discuss this route with your family, especially if you have teens who drive. Plan on meeting at a certain location away from the storm area so you can find each other in case you get separated. And, everyone should know who to contact in case of an emergency, and teach your children how and when to call 911. If possible learn First Aid and CPR. There are many community centers that often classes for individuals and families.
4. We have learned from living in Florida during hurricane season to watch for high water. Looks are deceiving, and the water may be deeper than it appears on the surface. Another concern is that these storms can wash away the foundation of roads beneath you. If your vehicle stalls while crossing in high water, leave it. Rising waters move swiftly and can sweep the car away. Authorities advise anyone caught in rising waters to seek higher ground immediately, and call for help.
