Ghost Stories

"The Soldier" is a ghost that was first experienced by a long time hotel employee by the name of Jewel France. She showed a guest to their cottage, number 4, and allowed the guest to enter first. The guest asked Jewel if anyone had ever told her the place was haunted. Jewel looked into the room and saw a man dressed in military uniform. She felt a chill and shook a bit. The vision disappeared. Since then she doesn't like Cottage Number 4.

The hotel plays classical music in the rooms to greet the guests as they arrive. The soldier doesn't like classical music. Once Jewel left the room the music gets changed to country music. Jewel says that she goes back to reset the radio, but it will change back.

History of the Hotel Maison de Ville and the Audubon Cottages in New Orleans, LA

This historic French Quarter hotel was built as a two story house in around 1800, after the disastrous fire of 1788 destroyed much of New Orleans.

Maison de Ville means "town house" in French. The two story structure was just that. The town house turned hotel has witnessed over two hundred years of New Orleans history.

One of the early residents of the house was Antoine Amedee Peychaud, who was an apothecary. Peychaud developed a concoction of bitters and brandy. Peychaud is often credited with inventing the first cocktail, Peychaud Bitters. The bitters are still produced today, and are used in a traditional New Orleans cocktail called Sazerac.

The Carriage House is adjacent the the courtyard and is now a two story suite. Across the courtyard are what is believed to be four former slave quarter, possibly the oldest buildings in New Orleans.
