Many people in America are trying to get out of debt. Thanks to Dave Ramsey and the realization that debt can be dangerous, many people have made the decision to get their family out of debt. But like trying to lose weight or trying to stop smoking, or several other things people try to do, trying to get out of debt requires lots of motivation. Most people start out excited and fired-up. But over time they lose lots of that motivation. They soon realize that change is not easy and requires real commitment. How does one keep the energy high as they try to get out of the hole? Here are some ideas for maintaining intensity.

You need to set realistic goals and write them down.

In order to complete your get out of debt goal you must know yourself and set goals accordingly. Some people have the personality that allows them to totally forget about everything else. They will forget about eating out, going to the movies or doing anything fun ever until they reach their goal. Other people need the occasional splurge to keep them going. Set your goals accordingly. Taking a break occasionally for a night out is ok as long as you realize that it will take you a little longer to accomplish your goal. Also write your goals down somewhere and refer to them frequently.

Think about what you will do.

I love Dave Ramsey's quote " Live like no one else, so later you can life like no one else. " This is exactly what you are doing when you are getting out debt. Your making a decision that you're not going out know, or you're not going to buy that now so that later you can do whatever you want. A great tip for motivating yourself during this journey is simple to say that phrase to yourself. "I'm living like no one else, so later I can live like no one else." Say it to yourself over and over until you get the strength not to what ever it is you are thinking about doing. I like the idea of making list. Write down all the things you will do when you accomplish your goal. What things will you buy? What places will you visit? Think about how it will feel to have money to do these things.

Remind yourself of all the positives.
