God is For Real, Man is a book that was published back in 1966. Yet, the ideas presented in it are timeless. In fact, the ideas presented in the book are actually Bible stories. They are not new, yet they are put into a
completely different lingo.
With the buzz all about reading youth ministry books that are about how to deal with pre-teens and teenagers, this is a book that should be read by all youth ministers: paid and volunteer.
Carl F. Burke transcribed Bible stories that were retold by juveniles in Erie County's jail in Buffalo, New York. He calls these juveniles "angels with busted halos."
Many youth ministers today act as if having pre-teens and teenagers retelling Bible stories in their own words as a new invention. However, it is an old practice that works quite well for a lot of teens.
The book has a few retellings of stories from the Old Testament, a few retellings of some psalms and proverbs, and many retellings of stories in the New Testament.
Very few people would recognize, "A guy is pretty smart / If he don't hang around with hoods / And do what they tell him" as the first verse to Psalm 1. Nor would they recognize, "The project manager's son was getting married. So his father said, 'Let's throw a wild party!'" as the beginning of the parable of the wedding feast as found in Matthew 22:1-4.
Of course, much of the slang is outdated. Many people may not have understood it in the first place. There are a few things that may still be used. It does not matter at what level the slang is understood as a glossary of slang is found at the back of the book so the stories can be interpreted.
Each story aslo has where the Bible passage can be found so the Bible story can be read from the Bible.
Carl F. Burke transcribed these stories as he was the Chaplain of Erie County Jail and worked with the juveniles.
There is a small cover blurb on the back of the book. It states, "God is For Real, Man is for real, man. Thousands of people - of all faiths and none - who have bought this book since April 1966 say so." It goes on to list reasons.
Unfortunately, this books seems to be out of print. However, used copies of the book can be bought on Amazon.com
