On Saturday, October 20, The Whistle Stop and The Humane Society of SWLA will hold the "Best Friends" Fun Dog Show. This dog show is not about showing pure breeds, but about showing off the dog that you love. It does not matter how much of a pure breed or a mutt the dog may be. It just matters that the dog is loved.

The "Best Friends" fun dog show will be held at the Lake Charles Civic Center. Special events and registration will start at 9:30am. The dog show competition will start at 11:30am.

The registration fee is $25.00 per dog. By paying the $25, each dog is allowed to compete in six categories. There are sixteen categories. If a dog is to compete in any more than the six categories, an extra $6 per category may be paid. Dogs are entered into categories on a first come first serve basis.

Handlers who are 17 years of age or younger are categorized as youth handlers. Handlers 18 years of age or older are categorized as adult handlers. All dogs must be at least six months old, have good manners, and be kept on a leash. Also, female dogs should not compete if they are in season.

All proceeds benefit The Whistle Stop. The Whistle Stop is a nonprofit agency in Lake Charles that is a supervised visitation and exchange center. This allows for parents of children who have troubles be able to visit their children.

The "Best Friends" Fun Dog Show is also sponsored by Citgo Petroleum.

The sixteen different categories are as follows.

1. A Salute to the Red, White, and Blue.

This is the dog that can dress the best in red, white, and blue to honor America.

2. Most Unusual Ears.

This category is for the dog who has unique ears compared to most other dogs.

3. Best Pooch Smooch.

This is for the dog that gives the best and the most unique kisses.

4. Mardi Gras.

In this category, both the dog and the handler should exhibit the fun and pageantry of Mardi Gras.

5. Most Adorable.

This category should be for dogs that are up for adoption. They are wanted to be shown so some of the viewers of the dog show will take them home to be loved.

6. Couch Potato.

In this category, dogs should look lazy and ready to sleep. Drooling is welcome.

7. Terrific Pet Trick.
