Shopping carts are provided by most retailers so their customers have a handy way to carry their goods while they shop. Carts are a handy invention. But, just like any vehicle, if they aren't used correctly, they can create problems. Read this informative article and find out how using shopping cart etiquette can help make your marketing experiences more enjoyable... and keep you out of court at the same time!

Think about it: everytime you walk into a store, you're being contained in a building with strangers. Even though you don't know these other people, you do have one thing in common. And that is, you're there to buy products the establishment is selling. If you're inside any store where you might have a list to fulfill, chances are that you and most everyone else around you is on a mission. Get everything on the list, pay for the products and hurry out the door.

It's often been said we live in a "Me-me-me" society. And it's that kind of thinking that can get us into trouble. Self absorbency tends to obliterate common sense, common courtesy to others and caring for the others who also share this planet.

Here are some basic Shopping Cart Etiquette Rules:

1. Pay Attention To Where You're Going
Pushing a shopping cart is kind of like driving a car- you've got to keep your eyes on the road. Or, in this case, keep your eyes on the aisles and your surroundings. Even though we live in a world where multi-tasking is expected, you can't always perform more than one chore at the same time. You can't safely push your shopping cart along while you're thumbing through coupons, hollering at your kids and answering your cell phone at the same time, for example. It's just impossible.

2. Keep An Assured Clear Distance
Rear-end another vehicle while you're driving on the roads, and you'll be cited for not keeping an "assured clear distance." Follow another customer too closely with a shopping cart and you run the risk of clipping their heels. Not a good thing to do! Those metal carts hurt when they're run into human flesh. Practice good shopping cart etiquette and stay clear of others.

I hate when people leave their carts in the way, too! If I leave my cart to grab something off a shelf, I make sure it's pushed to the side of the aisle, so others can still get through. One addition: empty your cart when you finish using it! I hate grabbing a cart that has wadded up Kleenex or something in it. Eww.

I wish sometimes that stores had in-store parking for carts. Wouldn't it be nice? You could park there and then run over to get something. Less aisle blocking. Maybe if there were a couple, you could do each part of the store without having to push it as much. But stores want to fill space with things to sell, so that's no good.

This is a great article. I agree that people need to watch their children with shopping trolleys and leaving trolleys in the middle of aisles so you can't get by is quite annoying. I just move them. Sophie

Great article. I would add don't park your cart next to the display in the middle of the aisle. No one can get around you.
