I didn't breastfeed my oldest daughter. Once I realized that I was listening to some breastfeeding myths instead of facts, I decided to try breastfeeding after I gave birth to my next daughter. One of the biggest concerns for me, however, was how my toddler would react to seeing me breastfeed. We'd had almost no exposure to breastfeeding, and I wondered how she would handle it. In addition, I was worried about time. Would it be possible to breastfeed a newborn and an infant with a toddler roaming the house and demanding my attention as well? Considering breastfeeding your second or third child, but afraid to commit? You may be surprised to read that many of my initial concerns about breastfeeding an infant with a toddler in the house were unfounded!

Concern #1: It would be too time consuming to breastfeed when I had a toddler to watch.
My toddler daughter was very understanding of the fact that mommy had to sit down to feed her newborn baby sister. It wasn't any more time consuming to breastfeed my newborn than it might have been to bottle feed her. In addition, I actually had more time to devote to my toddler by breastfeeding. I didn't have to spend time making, heating, and washing bottles like I had when she was a baby. I also found breastfeeding to be very calming and relaxing, and as a result, I think I had more patience with my daughter during those busy first weeks.

Takeaways
  • Breastfeeding was actually less time consuming that bottle feeding would have been.
  • My toddler and I both learned to be more comfortable with breasts.
  • Jealousy will result from a new addition to the family, not from breastfeeding itself.

I wish I had read this months ago. In October I gave birth to beautiful baby boy, I already had a three year old daughter. I hadmany of the same concerns you did but just like with yours, everything turned out to be fine. My daughter also breastfeeds her babies lol.

You get pretty handy with nursing while doing other things when you have a baby.

Great article! I hear your point about the bottles... after the initial start of breastfeeding (which is a bit harder) I think that formula is by far more difficult :)

I hope this encourages mothers to breastfeed their second child even if they didn't breastfeed their first.

This is a really great article. I only have one child but if we choose to have another this will be a concern of mine. Thanks so much for the information.

Thanks for the comments Jody and Heather. I think that because I didn't breastfeed my oldest, these concerns really weighed on me when I thought about the possibility of breastfeeding #2. I cannot express how happy I am that I tried breastfeeding...it was a wonderful experience for my entire family!

Awesome article Kelly. Our girls were breastfed at the same time (twins), so I guess it never crossed our mind. Great info and article.
